ILOILO City – A hotel received a phone call from a man who identified himself as this city’s mayor and demanded money.

“The caller asked P150,000 from the hotel,” Mayor Jose Espinosa III told city hall reporters.

The mayor learned of the extortion attempt from the hotel’s management that immediately informed him of what happened.

Espinosa said the National Bureau of Investigation had been asked to conduct a probed.

The impostor used a mobile phone to call the hotel, according to the mayor.

“We should stop this kind of wrongdoing. This serves as a warning to others also who might fall victim to the modus operandi,” said Espinosa.

He advised the public the check with city hall first should they receive a call from anyone claiming to be the city mayor.

“We don’t call anybody to ask for money or for any contribution,” stressed Espinosa.

The mayor said he had not authorized anyone “to use my name.”

Anyone namedropping him should be arrested, he said last month.

Someone who figured in a commotion at Smallville entertainment and leisure complex in Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao district claimed he was an Espinosa when chided by responding policemen in October.

“Kon ako to, sia unahon ko dakpon (If I were the responding policeman, I would have arrested that person),” said Espinosa.

The mayor said nobody should invoke his name, most especially in crimes./PN
