MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas struggled heavily on its outside shooting and suffered a 72-83 defeat to South Korea in the William Jones Cup last night at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.

The 3-point shooting — which served as its weapon in three previous victories — abandoned the Philippine national men’s basketball team, converting only a triple out of 26 tries.

The Koreans, which were leading the tournament in 3-point shooting, also struggled — making only six of 19 tries — but managed to come up with inside hits to keep their hope for a title alive.

Junghyun Lee and Sekeun Oh led the way with 14 points apiece while Junyong Choi and Ung Heo had 11 points apiece for Koreans, which tied Canada and Lithuania with a 4-1 win-loss record.

From a slim lead at the end of the opening period, South Korea pulled away in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead. Gilas rallied to within 36-35 before the Koreans got a break from phantom calls by the referees for 42-37 at halftime.

The Koreans continued to convert from the inside in the second half to build a lead as high as 16 points before Gilas went on a run to come to as close as 4 points on conversions by Mike Myers.

But South Korea got a lift from back-to-back conversions from veteran Oh to widen the advantage to 11 on free throws by Lee and Heo with under a minute left in the game.

Myers and Jio Jalalon top-scored with 18 points apiece while Christian Standhardinger added 16 markers for the 3-2 Gilas, which hopes to bounce back against Iraq at 5 p.m. today./PN
