BORACAY – This world-famous resort island played host to 16 of the 90 or so Miss Universe beauty pageant contestants yesterday.
Former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson and Malay, Aklan mayor Ciceron Cawaling welcomed the candidates at the Godofredo Ramos Airport in Caticlan around 9 a.m.
Hundreds of locals welcomed the beauties who were also treated to a performance from an Ati-Atihan Festival dance group, according to the Department of Tourism.
Miss Australia Caris Tiivel exclaimed, “This is unbelievable! All these folks, young and old, turned up to welcome us.”
From the airport, the candidates were transported via ferries to Boracay for some five hours of swimwear photo shoot, said Roselle Ruiz, Aklan tourism officer.
Aside from the photo shoot, however, the delegates also tried their hands at weaving and fishnet-making in a bid to learn about Boracay’s Ati culture.
“The intricate weaving shows the rich Filipino culture,” said Miss Mexico Kristal Silva.
The ladies also took a dragon boat ride. Boracay hosts an international dragon boat festival every summer.
The candidates left Boracay for Metro Manila around 1 p.m. The other beauties were from Poland, Honduras, US Virgin Islands, Namibia, Chile, Ecuador, Belize, Malta, Guyana, Myanmar, Costa Rica, Turkey, Nicaragua, and Argentina.
Security for the beauties was tight. Aside from the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Coast Guard also secured them.
“Boracay is even more exciting and meaningful. The people are very friendly and joyful to be with,” said Miss Myanmar Htet Htet Htun.
The visit of the Miss Universe candidates in Boracay is expected to boost further the popularity of the island.
The Miss Universe 2016 coronation will be on Jan. 30, 2017 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. It will be broadcast live in 190 countries from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m./PN
