MANILA Sen. Nancy Binay is urging the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to exhaust all means to temper power-rate increases following the maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya natural gas facility.

Malampaya’s shutdown took effect on Jan. 28 and will last until Feb. 16.

“Given that we still have no final determination of the actual power costs, I urge the ERC to extensively review all power supply agreements and secure all options that can offset or minimize the possible rate hike,” the vice chairwoman of the Senate energy committee on Sunday said.

The Manila Electric Company said the month-long maintenance shutdown of Malampaya may hike power generation cost by as much as P1.44 per kilowatt-hour.

To reduce consumer spending, Binay said the regulatory sector should allow any pending customer rebates to be reflected in the electricity bills this March.

“We also should be open to the possibility of staggering the payment of electricity bills,” the senator from Makati suggested.

“If we can, let us have the bill collection spread out over a longer period of time so the public can pay lower increments every month.”

The Malampaya natural gas facility is the source of fuel for Ilijan (1,200MW), Sta. Rita (1,000), and San Lorenzo (500MW), all covering almost half of the electricity requirements for Luzon./PN
