ILOILO – The rehabilitation of the century-old provincial jail into a regional extension museum-gallery of the National Museum is expected to be completed next month, according to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.

The jail is located on Bonifacio Drive, Iloilo City at the back of the Iloilo provincial capitol, on the lot owned by the provincial government.

The vacant lot in front of the jail-turned-museum and the adjacent regional office of the Department of Tourism will also be improved, said Defensor.

The regional extension museum-gallery of the National Museum will be inaugurated next month, too.

The National Museum itself will be running the museum-gallery, not the provincial government.

The conversion of the old provincial jail into a museum is a brainchild of the governor. The museum, he said, will showcase the rich culture and heritage of Iloilo and neighboring provinces.

The old provincial jail, with lot area of 868 square meters, was built in 1911. It could hold over a thousand prisoners.

The building was abandoned in 2006 after the completion of a new provincial jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo./PN
