DUMAGUETE City – Several police officers in Negros Oriental were being monitored on suspicion that they were involved in illegal drugs, according to the acting provincial police director.

Most of them were alleged drug users, while some receive money from drug personalities in areas where the trade remains rampant, Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas said without naming names.

Biñas said he supports the directive of Director General Ronald dela Rosa, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, to rid the police ranks of officers who continue to get involved in illegal drug trafficking.

He said he already warned the concerned officers to stop their illicit practices and change their ways before it is too late.

There is still time to change because the PNP organization is giving its personnel a chance to give up their old ways, said Biñas.

Moreover, he said he reminded them of the harmful effects of drug use, as well as the effects it has on families.

In previous years some Negros Oriental police officers were reassigned outside of the province for their involvement in drugs, said Biñas.

He said he cannot keep reminding the officers, who are old enough to understand the consequences, but strict sanctions will be imposed on them if they ignore the warnings. (PNA)
