BACOLOD City – Did Councilor Edison Dela Rita of Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental have a hand in the ambush that killed six police officers and his aide on Saturday?
Did he make up the report that he was ambushed in the hinterland village of Magsaysay, Guihulngan City and supposedly needed police help?
Dela Rita denied being complicit with the New People’s Army (NPA) in the ambush.

Around 7 a.m. on July 21, Dela Rita said, he was riding a motorcycle driven by a certain Ruzel Dennis bound for Guihulngan City proper when they heard bursts of gunfire.

They fell on the road and then scampered for cover until he fell off a cliff that resulted in his injuries on the head and face, said the councilor.

His bodyguard (not driver, as previously reported), Michael Jambalos, was driving another motorcycle ahead of them, said Dela Rita. Jambalos was shot and killed.

That was when he called the Guihulngan City police station for help, said Dela Rita.

A team of officers led by their station chief, Superintendent Arnel Arpon, responded around 10 a.m. Six of them died, including Arpon.

Others killed were Police Officers 2 Alfredo Dunque and Alvin Bolandres; Police Officer 3 Teovic Agusto; Senior Police Officer 2 Nicasio Tabilon; and Senior Police Officer 1 Jesael Ancheta.

Three were wounded: Senior Police Officer 4 Jerome Delara, Police Officer 2 Jorie Maribao and Police Officer 3 Jordan Balderas.

They were taken to a hospital in Guihulngan but were later transferred to the Silliman Medical Center in Dumaguete City.
Chief Superintendent Edmund Gonzales, Negros Island Region police director, conferred them with Sugatang Magiting medals.

Before heading to the Silliman Medical Center, Gonzales visited the remains of the fallen police officers at St. Peter’s Chapel in Guihulngan. The casualties were expected to receive posthumous honors.

The remains of Arpon has been transferred to their house in Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental.

Delara, who was driving the responding Mahindra patrol car, said the bursts of gunfire came from all corners. He said he failed to fire back as he jumped out of the patrol vehicle and sought cover.

Arpon fought back but was hit, Delara said. He added that he was still able to hear their station commander shouting for help but he believed the suspected New People’s Army rebels finished him off.

The officers lost six M16s, six .9mm pistols and three .45 pistols, and a number of bullets placed in bandoliers. They were believed taken by the attackers./PN
