MANILA – Jake Morallo scored the go-ahead goal as the Loyola Meralco Sparks Football Club-Manila edged Ilocos-United Football Club, 2-1, in the 2017 Philippine Football League at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Morallo, a fixture for the Negros football team, fired the game-winning goal early in the second half for the Loyola Meralco Sparks, which came from a 5-1 win over the Stallion Football Club-Laguna a week ago.

“We expected a tough match. It was psychological for our team and that of the opponent primarily because a number of player from Ilocos used to play for this team,” said Loyola Meralco Sparks head coach Aris Caslib.

It was the Ilocos United who got the lead early in the game following a conversion by Graham Caygill in the 13th minute. But that edge did not stay long as Tyler Matas fired his own goal five minutes later to equalize the score.

After a conversion by Morallo, Ilocos-United had multiple chances to tie the count but the favored Loyola Meralco Sparks tightened its defense forcing its opponent to have wayward shots.

With the victory, Loyola Meralco Sparks has gained the early lead in the standings with a 3-0 for six points, while Ilocos-United remained in the middle of the standings with one point following a draw last week against the Davao team.

Meanwhile, Global Football Club-Cebu recovered from an early deficit to score a 2-1 victory over JP Voltes Football Club-Marikina at the Biñan Football Stadium.

Philippine Azkals mainstays Amani Aguinaldo and Paul Mulders scored a goal each to lead the way for Global, while it was Odawara Takashi who scored the lone goal for JP Voltes./PN
