ILOILO City – The new archbishop of the Archdiocese of Jaro, Most Reverend Jose Romeo Lazo, bishop of San Jose, Antique, would be formally installed on April 17.
Over 200 priests from across the archdiocese will attend the installation at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral.
Lazo, 69, was named by Pope Francis as successor of Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, 77, on Feb. 14.
Lagdameo submitted to the Pope a letter of resignation when he reached the mandatory retirement age for archbishops – 75 – two years ago yet. It was only recently that this was accepted.
Lagdameo himself will lead the installation of Lazo, said Father Joenick Territorio, judicial vicar of the Archdiocese of Jaro.
Pope Francis designated Lagdameo as apostolic administrator of the archdiocese for the period that Lazo is not yet formally installed.
The installation ceremony starts at 9 a.m.
Lazo is the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Jaro and 30th bishop of the diocese of Jaro.
“Jaro was previously only a diocese,” said Territorio.
Lazo will arrive in the archdiocese in the afternoon of April 16. There will be a liturgical reception.
Lagdameo was assigned as archbishop of Jaro in 2000 after the death of Archbishop Alberto Piamonte.
“He was from Dumaguete City,” said Territorio./PN
