BACOLOD City – All health coordinators in Negros Occidental are urged to draw up plans to minimize – if not prevent – maternal deaths in the province.

Provincial Health Office (PHO) head Dr. Ernel Tumimbang said health facilities must give “utmost care” to patients giving birth this year.

Tumimbang said that while the number of teenage pregnancies rises, the number of maternal deaths also increases.

He, however, failed to present figures to support his claim.

He only cited “reports” his office received.

Tumimbang said all health coordinators in the province were already instructed to pass their proposals.

These proposals will be studied and implemented the soonest time possible, Tumimbang stressed.

Currently, PHO personnel, public health facilitators, and officials from Corazon Locsin Memorial Regional Hospital and Teresita Jalandoni Memorial Provincial Hospital are reviewing the cases of recorded maternal deaths in the province.

Tumimbang said they target to implement the program against maternal deaths early this year.

Aside from maternal death cases, the PHO is also prioritizing cases of dengue, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome)./PN
