MANILA – NLEX Road Warriors survived a second-half rally by KIA Picanto to score 100-93 in the PBA Governors’ Cup yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Reinforcement Aaron Fuller led the way with 24 points and 19 rebounds for Road Warriors, which moved up to solo first place in the standings with a 2-0 win-loss record.

Carlo Lastimosa and Kevin Alas added 13 markers apiece while JR Quinahan contributed 11 points for NLEX, which also scored 112-104 against Alaska Aces last Wednesday.

Road Warriors opened the match with a 23-11 lead on conversions by Lastimosa and Fuller. The lead grew further to 36-18 at the end of the period behind hits from Asi Taulava and Rabeh Al-Hussaini.

NLEX’s lead continued to swell in the second period with 3-pointers from Alas and Larry Fonacier en route to build its largest lead 78-51 on a triple by Marnel Baracael.

KIA began its fight-back late in the third quarter courtesy of reserves Philip Paniamogan, Nicholas Elorde and import Markeith Cummings to cut the deficit 70-83.

Road Warriors’ lead was cut further in the fourth to as low as 92-86 on a triple by Picanto’s Cummings, but late hits from Alas, Fuller and Quinahan increased NLEX’s lead to 10 points anew with under a minute left in the match.

Cummings finished with 30 points and 15 rebounds while Glenn Khobuntin and Chito Jaime added 15 and 13 points, respectively, for Picanto./PN
