LA Tenorio leads Gin Kings charge vs KaTropa

MANILA – NLEX Road Warriors withstood a late run by Alaska Aces to escape with a 96-89 victory in the PBA Philippine Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Negrense Raul Soyud, Kevin Alas and Larry Fonacier had 15 points each while Ilonggo Kiefer Ravena and JR Quinahan added 12 markers apiece for Road Warriors (5-4) to tally its third straight win.

Trailing by a hairline midway in the opening quarter, Road Warriors went to a scoring run behind Soyud, Alas and Quinahan to build its largest lead 66-36 early in the third quarter.

Aces came up with a huge response courtesy of Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel to come to as close as 89-91 but free throws from Alas, Ravena and Fonacier increased Road Warriors’ lead back to 7 points with 8.1 seconds left in the game.

“I think this win is good for us in terms of learning a lot of lessons,” said Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao. “I thought we would have a comfortable win. You really need a 30-ponit lead to beat Alaska. There’s a reason they got six straight wins.”

Manuel, Jvee Casio and rookie Jeron Teng finished with 12 points each while Abueva, Carl Bryan Cruz and Simon Enciso posted 10 points apiece for Aces (6-3).

GINEBRA DOWNS TNT

In the second game, LA Tenorio came up with crucial baskets in the final quarter as undermanned Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings cruised to a 93-78 victory over TNT KaTropa.

After seeing its early double-digit lead trimmed to a solitary point early in the fourth quarter, Tenorio came up with consecutive hits as Kings pulled to its largest lead 91-75 on a triple by Earl Scottie Thompson.

Tenorio led the way with double-double 27 points and 11 assists. Japeth Aguilar added 25 markers while Gregory Slaughter contributed 20 points and 14 rebounds for Kings (5-4).

“Crucial ang panalo na ito sa amin dahil dikit-dikit kami ng ibang teams sa standings,” Tenorio said. “We are close to the playoffs. Maganda ring makapagbaon kami ng panalo to boost our confidence.”/PN
