ILOILO City – President Rodrigo Duterte once again talked about the illegal drug problem in the country during the League of Municipalities of the Philippines’ (LMP) annual assembly at the Manila Hotel.

But unlike previous speeches about drugs, the President did not single out Iloilo this time, according to Ajuy, Iloilo mayor Jett Rojas, president of LMP-Iloilo.

Ginpakita niya lang ang listahan,” Rojas said, referring to the thick stack of paper allegedly containing the names of government officials and law enforcers with suspected links to the drug trade.

The President wielded the list before local chief executives while giving a speech on March 14.

According to Duterte, most of the alleged “drug players” in the Philippines are mayors, barangay captains and police officers, Rojas said.

In several previous speeches, Duterte tagged Iloilo as “most shabu-lized” and Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog as “drug protector.” He singled out Mabilog four times in televised speeches and press briefings.

Of the 1,489 mayors in the Philippines, 1,308 attended the LMP annual assembly. Rojas said “80 to 85 percent” of the 43 mayors in Iloilo were present.

Duterte once again appealed for support to his administration’s antidrug campaign, said Rojas.

He stressed that the campaign will succeed not only through the efforts of the police but also with participation from mayors, vice mayors and Sangguniang Bayan members, the LMP-Iloilo president said.

Meanwhile Rojas said LMP National Chapter president Maria Fe Villar Brondial of Socorro, Oriental Mindoro presented resolutions concerning budget for K to 12 school supplies, aid to municipalities, higher Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) for towns, and support to Duterte’s programs.

With 700 to 800 towns incurring IRA reductions, the mayors asked the President for higher allocation in 2018 budget, Rojas said.

Department of the Interior and Local Government secretary Ismael Sueno, Philippine National Police chief Ronald Dela Rosa and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office chairman Jose Jorge Corpuz graced the assembly./PN
