BACOLOD City – The city government will strictly enforce the “no segregation, no collection” policy on solid waste effective May 1.

April 1, the original schedule, is not a good time, according to Public Service Officer II Ramel Palalon of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Department of Public Services (DPS).

A “dry run” will start on that day instead along with an information campaign about the policy, Palalon said, citing discussion during a meeting of the Solid Waste Management Board on Monday.

The DPS has yet to create an enforcement team that will apprehend violators, he said.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act seeks the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of solid waste.

Local government units are “primarily responsible” for the enforcement of the law, Section 10 of Republic Act 9003 stated.

Earlier Mayor Evelio Leonardia said city hall will give barangays financial allocations to help them carry out the policy.

“There will be strict monitoring to ensure the budget is used in solid waste management,” said the mayor./PN
