BACOLOD City – The Roselyn Pelle Command of the New People’s Army (NPA) claimed responsibility for the death of a sugarcane planter.

On June 22, 67-year-old sugar planter Norberto Lumayno and his 45-year-old driver Danilo Braga were shot to death in Sitio Matso, Barangay Minapasok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.

Lumayno’s brother-in-law Raul Baterna, however, accused the Roselyn Pelle Command of spreading black propaganda.

He said there was no truth that the sugarcane planter and his driver were killed by the NPA.

Baterna revealed they have a suspect and will coordinate with the National Bureau of Investigation.

In a press statement, Roselyn Pelle Command spokesperson Cecil Estrella said the revolutionary court found Lumayno guilty for the death of farmers in the towns of Calatrava, Toboso and Don Salvador Benedicto.

The NPA also accused Lumayno of grabbing other people’s lands.

“Lumayno was a notorious land-grabber. He used goons to forcefully evict farmers,” according to Estrella.

The NPA also claimed Lumayno was responsible for the death of several individuals in 2007 and 2009; complaints were filed by the victims’ families at the revolutionary court in 2012 and 2013.

“In 2013 we issued a warrant of arrest against Lumayno but instead of handing himself over, he made the situation worse for the oppressed farmers,” the NPA press statement read.

The rebels also said Lumayno created a gun-for-hire group.

The Roselyn Pelle Command also linked Lumayno to the death of a certain Elvis Bocaling of Sitio Vergara, Barangay Bug-ang, Toboso town in April 2017./PN
