Nueva Valencia locals dominate ‘Bangkarera’

RESIDENTS of Nueva Valencia town in the island province of Guimaras dominated the “Bangkarera,” a side event of the 46th Iloilo Paraw Regatta at Puyo Wharf.

Bangkarera – a portmanteau of the Hiligaynon works bangka (boat) and karera (race) – is a race of boats without sails, unlike the traditional Paraw Regatta that features paraws, or small double-outrigger sailboats.

MelchorCayanan won first place in the Unmotorized–Manual Single Person category. Mark JoarineCayanan and Alejandro Cayanan placed second and third, respectively.

All residents of Barangay Tando, Nueva Valencia, they received cash prizes of P6,000, P4,000 and P3,000, respectively, a press release from the Guimaras provincial office showed.

In the Unmotorized–Manual Double Person category,Bilsy Gandecila placed first and took home P8,000 cash.RenefeGalvez was second place with P6,000 cash while JaynardSabobo placed third with P4,000. All three were residents of Barangay Tando, Nueva Valencia.

Remy Cayananof Barangay Tando, Nueva Valencia had the Most Colorful Barutoin the Single Person category. He won P3,000 cash.

His fellow Tando villagers Faith Rose Trifalgar and RomeyaCayanan placed second and third and bagged P2,000 and P1,000 cash, respectively.

Having the Most Colorful Barutoin the Double Person category was BilsyGandecilaJr., also of Barangay Tando. He won P3,000 cash. Marian Joy Sabobo of the same village placed second with P2,000.

While an Iloilo Paraw Regatta novelty, Bangkarera is nothing new Nueva Valencia, whose local government started holding such race in 2004, according to Mayor Emmanuel Galila.

Second: Julian Branes–Pontevedra, Negros Occidental

Third: JelorieBianes–Miransa, Pontevedra, Negros Occidental

Fisherman’s Boat Race

First: BengieGandecila – Tando, Nueva Valencia (P4,000)

Second: GeofreyCagayan – Tando, Nueva Valencia (P3,000)

Third: Ricky Villanueva – Tando, Nueva Valencia (P2,000).
