ILOILO City – The conversion of the century-old Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC) in this city into a Regional Extension Museum-Gallery of the National Museum will soon be finished.

The original target of completion is actually end of next month but this may be moved back a little. The glass dome will still have to be elevated to about 1.2 meters.

The restoration of the old provincial jail has two phases. The Phase 1 cost P18 million and included the demolition or retrofitting of the original structure. This was completed in January 2016.

Work on Phase 2 is ongoing and covers the construction of the glass dome and landscaping for P80 million.

The museum will showcase the rich culture and heritage of Iloilo and neighboring provinces.

The old IRC, with a lot area of 868 square meters, was built in 1911. It could accommodate a thousand prisoners.

The building was abandoned in 2006 after the completion of a new provincial jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo./PN
