ILOILO City – To rally young people against illegal drugs, the convention “Barkada Kontra Droga” was held at the covered gym of Dumangas, Iloilo.

The Department of Education (DepEd) organized the Jan. 7 convention. It gathered 3,637 students from various secondary schools across Iloilo province.

This was the fifth edition of “Barkada Kontra Droga.”

Mayor Ronaldo Golez welcomed DepEd’s choice of his municipality as venue of the convention.

“We really prepared for this. Tama gid katahum sang partisipasyon sang kabataan. Voluntary nga nag-join sila sa sini nga kausa,” said Golez.

He expressed confidence that the convention would have a positive impact on the province’s youths.

The choice of Dumangas as convention venue was also a recognition of the municipality’s own campaign against illegal drugs, Golez added.

“Our campaign against drug trafficking is ceaseless. We want to shield young people from drug abuse,” he stressed.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency identified the seaport of Dumangas as a transshipment point of shabu in Iloilo due to its porous security. The municipal government has taken steps to address this concern./PN
