ILOILO City – Better late than never.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6 has so far released P54,945,000 from the Presidential Financial Assistance (PFA) fund to 2013’s super typhoon “Yolanda” survivors who failed to qualify for the government’s Emergency Shelter Assistance (ESA).

The regional office started releasing the assistance in May 29, 2017, according to Lisa Camacho, DSWD-6 social welfare officer.

A total of 75,072 households in Western Visayas are eligible to receive the financial assistance, said Camacho.

“Yolanda”, one of the strongest typhoons on record, struck the Philippines on Nov. 8, 2013.

It forced hundreds of thousands from their homes and knocked out power and communications in several central Philippine provinces.

As of Aug. 15, 10,989 households so far got P5,000 each – 2,902 from Aklan; 2,396 from Antique; 1,718 from Capiz; and 3,973 from Iloilo.

The money was released either through the Land Bank of the Philippines (cash cards) or direct payout.

“Hopefully, we can complete the release of the monetary assistance by next month,” said Camacho.

There have been “minimal” complaints with regard to the fund’s release, she added, such as “wala nadala sa pag-encode.”

“Gina-verify naton kon naka-fill-up sila sang PFA form. If they have, gina-include ta sila sa direct payout,” said Camacho.

November last year during the third anniversary of “Yolanda”, President Rodrigo Duterte promised to release financial assistance to some 200,000 “Yolanda” survivors in regions 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), and the Negros Island Region who were not able to receive the ESA./PN
