ILOILO City – The weeklong 45th Iloilo Paraw Regatta has opened.

Showing the Philippines as a seafaring nation, “Dali na kag magkinasadya” is this year’s theme.

“This year our focus is our seafarers. Iloilo is one of the biggest producers of qualified seafarers,” said Ronald Raymond Sebastian, president of the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation.

The slalom competition is on Feb. 16 beginning at Tatoy’s Manokan, Villa Beach in Arevalo district. The competition will start at 7 a.m.

There will be a Paraw Regatta Festival Seafarers Job Fair at the Metro Supermarket, Atria around 10 a.m. on Feb. 16. According to Sebastian, around 10 shipping companies will participate.

“Bayluhay”, a stage play, was held at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center yesterday afternoon.

The regatta is on Feb. 19. There are three categories:

  • Category A – sailboats with waterline length of not more than 16 ft

  • Category B – sailboats with waterline length of 16.1 ft to 22 ft

  • Category C – sailboats with waterline length of 22.1 ft and above.

The foundation expects the same number of participants as last year’s – 60.

That same day, several side events will be held such as Pinta Layag (sail painting) and Pinta Tawo (body painting competitions at the Villa Beach shoreline.

Other side events lined up are the following:

  • anglers’ competition

  • beach volleyball

  • photo contest.

In the evening, the foundation is introducing three new activities of the festival – Battle of the Bands, Lighted Paraw Contest, and Fire Dance. All these will be at Villa Beach shoreline, too./PN
