MANILA – The Philippine delegation added two bronze medals to its collection as the 29th edition of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games formally begins today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Filipino archery bet Paul Marton De La Cruz salvaged a bronze medal in the men’s singles archery compound event after beating Malaysian Zulfadhli Ruslan, 154-153, in the shootout.

De La Cruz was already up 144-134 late in the game when Ruslan scored on a 10-point shot to tie the count.

In the tiebreak, the Filipino escaped with the win as the Malaysian managed to just score nine points in his last attempt.

De La Cruz later aided teammates Earl Yap and Joseph Vicencio in capturing the bronze medal in the men’s compound team event after defeating Vietnam, 233-230, in the battle-for-third place.

The Philippine compound team had a strong start. It defeated the Myanmar squad, 236-214, but faltered the semifinals game against silver medalist Singapore, 233-227.

Meanwhile, after winning their opening day assignments, the national men’s and women’s football team suffered separate setbacks in their matches on Thursday evening.

The Philippine men’s football team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of powerhouse Indonesia, while the national women’s squad bowed to the Vietnamese football team, 3-0./PN
