MANILA – Global Cebu Football Club of the Philippines scored a 3-1 victory against Beoung Ket Angkor of Cambodia in first leg of the 2017 Singapore Cup quarterfinals Tuesday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Paolo Salenga fired two goals while Misagh Bahadoran added a conversion for Global, which hopes a repeat win against the Cambodians in the second leg on Friday night.
It was also the Cebu-based football club’s third straight victory over the Cambodian squad this year after sweeping their two encounters in the 2017 Asian Football Confederation Cup group stage.
Global gained the early lead, with Salenga draining one from inside the box. The lead was doubled heading into the half with Bahadoran converting a running hit.
In the second half, Beoung Ket Angkor reduced the lead on a penalty kick by Khoun Laboravy but Global was quick to restore the three-goal advantage with Salenga draining another close hit.
“We won this match but we cannot be complacent heading into the second leg,” said Global head coach Akbar Nawas. “We know that Beoung Ket Angkor is also a strong team and has the tools to fight back.”
Global hopes to surpass the third-place finish of Ceres Negros Football Club last year – the highest finish ever by a Philippine-based team in the tournament.
The winner of the Global-Beoung Ket Angkor series will face the winner of the other series, between Hougang United of Singapore and Nagaworld of Cambodia, in the two-leg semifinals./PN
