MANILA – Phoenix Fuel Masters got back on the winning track in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup with a 102-91 victory over NLEX Road Warriors at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Simon Enciso led the way with 21 points, including five three-point conversions, for the Fuel Masters, now in a three-way tie at the fourth spot with TNT Katropa and Blackwater Elite with a 5-4 win-loss slate.

JC Intal and Cyrus Baguio chipped in with 16 and 13 points, respectively, while rookie Matthew Wright and William Wilson had 12 points each for the Fuel Masters, which prevailed in the Wednesday night match despite 31 turnovers.

Trailing at the end of the opening quarter, the Fuel Masters struggled to regain form early in the second frame before tying the game at 48-all. It then leaned on five straight points by Wright for a 53-48 halftime lead.

The Fuel Masters continued its hot shooting in the third frame behind Michael Miranda and Enciso to build a 64-56 lead. The lead later grew to its largest at 94-70 on back-to-back hits by Enciso and Intal.

The Road Warriors made its last push behind Jonas Villanueva and Sean Anthony as it was able to come to within 99-89. But a three-pointer by Wright with under a minute to go in the game sealed the victory for the Fuel Masters.

“I challenged them. We lost the first quarter because of a three-point shot, and we just told them to seal out their shooters,” said Fuel Masters head coach Ariel Vanguardia “There’s nothing to celebrate pa kasi iyong mga ka-tie namin sa standings, tinalo kami.

Anthony top-scored with 23 points, while Villanueva and Negrense center Raul Soyud had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Road Warriors, which is now out of the playoffs with a 2-7 win-loss slate./PN
