MANILA – The public opposition to martial law as reflected in a recent survey shows that the Filipinos have kept the “spirit of freedom” alive, said Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.
A survey by Pulse Asia conducted from Dec. 6 to 11 said that 74 percent of Filipinos believe that martial law will not solve the many problems of the country.
“Filipinos live and breathe freedom. It is in our DNA,” Pangilinan said.
According to him, the results of the Pulse Asia indicated that the nation has not forgotten the dictatorial leadership of the late tyrant Ferdinand Marcos.
He also urged everyone to defend democracy and fight any possible re-imposition of martial law.
“Democracy is never easy. But it’s what makes freedom possible. It ensures that we have a say in how our government perform its sacred duty to fulfil all our rights as people and citizens so that we may achieve our fullest potential as individuals and as a nation,” Pangilinan said.
Meanwhile, the acting president of the Liberal Party said he shares the sentiment of former United States president Barack Obama who warned about threats to democracy in his farewell speech recently.
“(Our democracy will determine) our ability to teach our kids, create good jobs, (and) protect our homeland. (In other words, it) will determine our future,” Pangilinan said quoting the American leader.
The survey with 1,200 respondents coincided with the announcement of the Supreme Court decision in favor of the burial of Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani./PN
