MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested three suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) for allegedly planning to disrupt activities during the recent Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
In a press conference yesterday, PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa identified the three ASG members as Abdulgaffar Jikiri, 19; Alim Sabtalin, 19; and Sadam Jhofar, 24.
Dela Rosa said the three were arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Quezon City Police District and the National Bureau of Investigation Counter-Terrorism Division on Nov. 10 at the Salam Compound in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City.

The PNP chief added that while the three denied the alleged plot to disrupt the ASEAN Summit, their social media posts showed otherwise; they conducted surveillance and ocular inspection in malls and public parks near the venue.

“Hindi sila umamin. But through our diligent efforts in conducting investigation, apparently may plano talaga sila na terror attack that would cause damage to the (representation) of the Philippine government as Summit host,” Dela Rosa said.
He added: “Nakita namin sa social media posts nila na nagkaroon sila ng ocular inspection sa mga kalapit doon sa Philippine International Convention Center.”

Seized from Jikiri were a .45 pistol, M1911 US Army, a magazine with four live ammunitions, two M203 rifle grenades and six cellular phones.

Recovered from Sabtalin were a .9mm pistol while confiscated from Jhofar was a .45 Colt M1991.
The three are to be charged with violation of Section 28 (unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition) of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) in relation to the gun ban implemented during the ASEAN Summit./PN
