ILOILO – A barangay tanod (village watchman) in Purog, Pototan town had been shot and stabbed early morning yesterday.

The 38-year-old Danny Peligrino perished at the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in the town.

Police were now hunting down the suspect — 25-year-old Jonito Soriano, also of Barangay Purog, Pototan.

According to Senior Inspector Bonifacio Alabe, Pototan police chief, the incident happened around 6:30 a.m.

Peligrino accompanied his cousin and fellow tanod Eden to the barangay hall to settle a misunderstanding with the suspect, who was accompanied by friend Oting Soriano from Dumarao, Capiz.

Around 10 p.m. on Thursday, Eden slapped Jonito Soriano for being unruly and creating disturbance at the public plaza, Alabe said.

All four were walking to the barangay hall the following morning when a heated argument ensued between them, said Alabe.

Jonito Soriano pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and Peligrino tried to disarm him.

Both grappled for the firearm until it went off, hitting Peligrino on the chest.

“Soriano also stabbed the victim on the right palm,” Alabe said.

Also yesterday, in Barangay Cabagohan, Batad, a 35-year-old resident of San Dionisio was arrested for illegal gambling.

Ruel Vencer of Barangay Canas, San Dionisio, was caught soliciting bets for “bookies” around 6:15 a.m., police said.

Cotejos (betting stubs), a ball pen and P50 bet money were seized from him.

Vencer was detained at the Batad police station./PN
