ILOILO City – A proposal is being floated to supposedly curb illegal gambling – for the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to set up an official betting station in each town for Small Town Lottery (STL).
There have been reports of STL bet collectors (also called cobrador, coriador or cabo, etc.) doubling as agents for illegal numbers games such as “bookies.”
The president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Iloilo, Mayor Jett Rojas of Ajuy town, said he would discuss the matter with fellow mayors but did not give a specific date.
But Rojas stressed it is PCSO and not the local governments that has supervisory authority over authorized STL operators, thus the government’s gaming regulatory body has the final say on the proposal.
“Wala man ina gihapon kon indi ang PCSO mag mandar,” he said.
The proposal is akin to PCSO’s operation of its lotto – official lotto betting stations are set up where people can place their bets.
Rojas revealed bringing up the matter to Presidential Assistant for Visayas Michael Dino who visited Iloilo last month.
“Kon wala nagasulod sa STL betting station sang banwa, buot silingon sa bookies sila nagapasulod,” said Rojas.
Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) director Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba welcomed the proposal.
“That would be great. Ma-minimize ang nagbo-bookies pag ganyan kasi iisa lang ang remittance; ma-monitor ng local governments, everybody,” he said.
Iloilo Provincial Board member Emmanuel Gallar, chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan committee on games and amusement, said he was also open to the idea./PN
