MANILA – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday has warned the bank depositors in giving their account’s personal information either via online, text or telephone inquiry.
BSP deputy governor for supervision and examination sector Nestor Espenilla said in an interview that those schemes are phishing attempt which is used to duplicate one’s automated teller machine (ATM) card.
“Many bank depositors are getting inquiries, mostly online, about their deposit status. Those asking introduce themselves from either a credit bureau or a credit card firm,” said Espenilla.
“These are attempts to harvest your credentials so fraudsters can clone you. So never respond to such unsolicited messages from an entity where you don’t have a relationship,” Espenilla added.
Phishing attempts are still prominent as only more than half of the ATM and credit card plastic cards have successfully migrated to a more hi-tech technology that bears the chip of Europay, Mastercard, Visa (EMV).
“Even in a situation where our bank seems to have contacted clients for details, be suspicious. Banks don’t operate that way. Better call or visit the bank for confirmation,” Espenilla said.
There are around 7.5 million credit cards and about 45 million ATM and debit cards all over the country. The BSP admitted that cards that are yet to migrate to EMV technology are more prone to phishing as these are easier to clone./PN
