BACOLOD City – A proposed ordinance requiring all applicants and awardees of stalls and blocks at public markets to have at least one fire extinguisher in their establishments was filed before the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).

Councilor Bartolome Orola, chairman of the SP committee on markets and slaughterhouse and the author of the proposal, said there have been many cases that fire gutted the city’s public markets.

Orola added that these incidents could have been prevented if there were fire extinguishers present in the stalls or blocks.

Fire extinguishers will be used to put out the fire in its early stage, the proposal stated.

The SP on its first reading last week approved the proposal.

Orola said a public hearing will be scheduled soon.

The councilor stressed that “public markets are central to our community life and without a doubt sparks urban revitalization and livelihood diversity.”

For such reason, Orola said “maintenance and safety of market premises must be given priority.”/PN
