ILOILO City – A weekend neighborhood fire in Barangay Rizal Estanzuela here totally gutted six houses and partially damaged seven others.

The fire started at around 2:10 p.m. on the second floor of Lauro Maestre’s house and quickly spread to adjacent houses, according to Fire Senior Inspector Jesus Valenzuela, city fire marshal.

Aside from Maestre’s house the five other completely razed houses were owned by Teresita Ledesma, Merlyn Ardonia, Mary Jane Penida, Albert Ardonia, and Charity Penida.

The partially damaged houses, on the other hand, belonged to Lorenzo Gomez, JR Maestre, Alma Palawar, Merly Maestre, Zaiero Magoleño, Allan Dalagatansan, and Cadelaria Dela Flor.

Most of the houses were made of mixed light materials.

Villanueva said initial investigation seemed to indicate that electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.

“May nakita na wires na sunog. Tinututukan natin ang angulo na electrical short circuit,” said Valenzuela.

Initial estimate of the fire’s damage was P900,000.

One person sustained slight burns on a hand – Joven Gomez. Medical personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection immediately treated him./PN
