MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters recovered from a 15-point deficit to score a 96-89 victory over NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA pocket tournament at the Upper Deck Sports Center in Ortigas.

Down by as much as 15 points 28-13 early in the second quarter of the Tuesday game, Painters made its move behind Beau Belga, Celedonio Trollano and Chris Tiu to trim the deficit to 40-51 at the half.

Painters finally gained control of the match in the third on outside shots by Trollano, Tiu and Mark Borboran for a 70-69 lead, which grew to 78-70 at the end of the period on a pair of baskets from Dexter Maiquez and a triple from Gabe Norwood.

Rain or Shine pulled away for good in the fourth for its largest lead 87-71 on back-to-back hits from Jewel Ponferrada and Trollano. Road Warriors had its last run but came only to as close as 7 points.

Trollano led the way with 20 points, including four triples, Ahanmisi added 16 markers, while Tiu and Eduardo Daquioag contributed 11 points apiece for Painters, which improved to a 2-0 win-loss slate.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini top-scored with double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie Kiefer Ravena and Asi Taulava added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Road Warriors, which dropped to 1-1.

Meanwhile Phoenix Fuel Masters recovered from its opening-day defeat to beat Alaska Aces 89-85. Matthew Wright top-scored with 17 points while Bacolodnon Justin Chua added 11 for Fuel Masters.

With the scores tied at 71-all, Fuel Masters unloaded an 11-0 run behind Wright, Chua and LA Revilla for an 82-71 lead. Aces went on a late run to come to within 85-87 on a basket by Jeron Teng but Wright’s free throws sealed the win for Phoenix./PN
