Almazan makes 23 as Painters posts 3rd straight win

MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters cruised to its third straight win in the PBA Philippine Cup by beating Magnolia Hotshots 101-95 last night at the Calasiao Sports Complex in Pangasinan.

Painters opened the match with a 9-0 lead on 7 early points by Almazan. Hotshots cut it to 18-22 but Rain or Shine raised the lead back to 8 points on hits from Mark Borboran and Eduardo Daquioag.

Hotshots managed to tie the scores 26-all early in the second period but Painters banked on triples from Norwood and Ahanmisi and inside baskets from Almazan for a 47-35 halftime lead.

Painters continued its torrid shooting in the third to build its largest lead 67-46 on back-to-back treys by Yap. Hotshots countered with its own outside shots to come to within 66-77.

Hotshots came to its closest at 9 points early in the fourth but a triple by Norwood and inside baskets by Celedonio Trollano and Yap allowed Painters to surge 96-80.

Magnolia made its last push to cut the deficit 91-100 on consecutive 3-point baskets by Aldrech Ramos but Painters’ tough defense prevented it from getting closer in the final seconds.

“I told my players before the game that we should put in more effort on defense because we are up against one of the top teams and a team that looks so fluid on both ends of the floor,” said Painters head coach Carlos Garcia.

Ramos finished with conference-high 27 points, including four 3-point conversions, while Rome dela Rosa added 15 markers for Hotshots (6-3)./PN
