ROXAS City – Libel and cybercrime charges were filed against three people accused of spreading photos of police officers with the foreigner driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal crash in Barangay Baybay.

Four members of the city police’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team lodged the complaint against Marisharm Aguirre, Jacki Abas and Troy Thyron Ombid at the City Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday.

The respondents were accused of posting on Facebook and commenting on photos of Gurparkash “Happy” Singh with SWAT officers Police Officer 3 Rizaldo Bonza and Police Officers 2 Jorie Escultero, Mark Anthony Banilla and Ignacio Deocampo.

The photo has elicited outrage from netizens.

Singh, an Indian national, was driving the Mitsubishi Mirage that crashed against coconut trees in Barangay Baybay on Nov. 7.

He and Joy Geco survived the crash but four other passengers – Patrick James Llave, Jomar Baes, Johnbert Ching Go, and Bryan Macalintal – died.

The SWAT officers said their photos with Singh were taken during the Capiztahan Festival last year contrary to the respondents’ allegation that they were recent.

This reporter was still trying to reach the respondents for comment as of press time.

Police also earned the ire of netizens when they learned that Singh have flown to Manila.

Moreover, officers were suspected of facilitating Singh’s discharge on Nov. 8 from a private hospital where Geco was still recuperating from serious injuries.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a member of the family of one of the casualties said Singh “could be liable for reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide, serious physical injuries and damage to property.”

Singh cannot be arrested because “the families of the victims have not filed any complaint against him,” said Superintendent Dante Tayco, city police chief.

But Tayco assured that “we will initiate his (Singh) arrest once an appropriate complaint is lodged against him.”/PN
