MANILA – San Beda College Red Lions recovered from a slow start to claim the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball crown with a 92-82 win over Lyceum Pirates in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Robert Bolick led the way with 18 points, with half coming in the final quarter on Thursday night, while Donald Tankoua, Davon Potts and Jayvee Mocon added 17, 15 and 14 points, respectively.

For sweeping the Pirates, which was undefeated in the entire elimination round, the Red Lions captured its second straight NCAA championship, 10th in the last 12 seasons and 21st overall.
Down by as much as 66-57 early in the third frame, the Red Lions turned to Mocon, Amiel Cris Soberano and Tankoua to trim the deficit to 65-66 heading into the fourth canto.
It was a seesaw battle for both teams early in the fourth frame with the Red Lions hanging to a one point lead until Soberano and Bolick back-to-back triples with 50 seconds left in the match to seal the championship.
“Medyo tense ‘yung mga players nung first half at nag-settle down kami nung halftime. I told them that we need to make stops if we want to be able to win the championship. I am glad my players responded,” said Red Lions head coach Teodorico Fernandez III.
“Hats off to Lyceum. They really made us earn it,” said Bolick. “This is the first time in 12 years na we came in the championship series as underdogs. Siguro ‘yung experience lang talaga ang naging edge namin.”
Season 83 MVP Jaymar Perez led the way with 22 points, while Mike Nzeusseu chipped in with double-double 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Pirates, which has achieved its best finish in the league so far./PN
