MANILA – The Philippines was already on the medal board even before the formal start of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games this Saturday.

It settled for silver in sepak takraw men’s Chinlone event 3 (linking) portion yesterday after losing to Malaysia 391-271 in the gold medal game in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Philippine squad – comprising John Bobier, Rhemwil Catana, Emmanuel Escote, Ronsited Gabayeron, Joeart Jumawan, John Carlo Lee, John Jeffrey Morcillos, Regie Pabriga, and Alvin Pangan – qualified for the finals after placing second in the preliminaries.

Sepak takraw’s Chinlone event is a traditional sport that originated in Myanmar where a ball is juggled and passed on to each player without allowing it to touch the ground.

On the other hand, the Filipino men’s and women’s football teams had an impressive start in the Games after scoring separate wins Tuesday night.

The Under-22 men’s team leaned on second-half goals by Reymart Cubon and Kou Ichi Belgira to defeat Cambodia 2-0 at the Selayang Stadium.

After their scoreless first half, the Philippines got the better hand when Cubon opened the scoring with a header from a pass by Jarvey Gayoso.

Cambodia had plenty of chances to equalize the match but failed to convert one until the Filipinos bagged the win with Belgira draining a free kick late in the game.

On the distaff side, Cam Rodriguez scored the go-ahead goal for her team to make a triumphant return in the Games with a 2-1 win over Malaysia at the UITM Stadium.

Just before halftime break, the Philippines clinched the advantage with veteran Patrice Impelido scoring a header. But Malaysia tied the score early in the second half courtesy of Dadree Rofinus.

The Filipinas did not waste time, quickly regaining the lead 2-1 with Rodriguez scoring on a strike. The Malaysians could have forced a deadlock, but all of its attempts were tightly guarded.

This was the first SEA Games match for the women’s team since 2005, when the game was held at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City./PN
