ASIDE from environmental problems, the Senate will look into informal settlements in Boracay Island.

The Committee on Tourism has scheduled an inquiry into the reported degradation of the world-famous tourist destination on March 2.

“I guess isa din iyon (informal settlements), at wala daw sewerage system kaya pagpunta namin doon
i-o-ocular inspection namin kung ano ang mga facilities na natayo sa Boracay,” committee chairwoman Nancy Binay said on Thursday.

According Binay, the waste disposal problem in the island resort serves as a “wakeup call” to address environmental degradation in other islands in the country.

“Isipin mo ilang beses nalalagay iyan sa mga travel magazines, laging nasa top three iyan ng best beaches in the world. Iyon ang nakakalungkot,” she said.

Lifestyle and luxury magazine CondĂ© Nast Traveler has identified Boracay as the world’s best island in 2016 and 2017, while Travel + Leisure magazine has named it the second best in Asia, next to Palawan./PN
