ILOILO City – A city councilor said diesel plants can be replaced with solar power and other renewable energy sources to reduce pollution and electricity costs.

Councilor R Leone Gerochi, in an interview with Panay News, said Iloilo can eventually eliminate diesel plants.

“These [diesel plants] are the worst pollutants so far as plants are concerned. It can be replaced by available solar power and other renewable resources,” he said.

Solar energy is considered one of the most environment-friendly energy sources.

He also noted that solar power can lessen the city’s demand for fossil fuels to generate electricity, citing the existing coal-fired power plants.

Gerochi furthermore explained that “as a matter of procedure, renewables sources should be first bought by electric distributors.”

“So if there’s somebody who wants to invest in renewable sources, more or less they can be assured that they will really be bought because they are the priority,” he added./PN
