BACOLOD City has been known as the source of the best football players in the country, but it is now gaining a new tag as the producer of quality volleyball players in collegiate leagues in Manila.

In the ongoing UAAP season, a number of players traced their roots in Bacolod City, including Arielle Estranero and Jessma Ramos of University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, and Kim Gequillana of Ateneo Lady Eagles.

Among schools in Bacolod City today, Bacolod Tay Tung High School has a strong volleyball program with their players highly recruited by Manila-based schools.

Aside from Marianne Sotomil, who will be playing for Lady Maroons next year, another emerging name from the Thunderbolts camp is 5-foot-8 middle blocker Joan Marie Monares.

Jose Montalbo, Tay Tungā€™s vice president for sports, told Buzzer Beater that the 16-year-old Monares has the potential with her height, athleticism and experience playing for Thunderbolts in various tournaments.

ā€œMagaling ā€˜yan siĀ Joan. In fact, she has won a number of awards while playing for us in various competitions here in Western Visayas,ā€ Montalbo said. ā€œKahit na 16 years old pa lang siya ay nakapag laro narin siya saĀ Palarong Pambansa.ā€

ā€œHowever, I believe na may igagaling pa siya at she is very coachable naman and hardworking kaya I have no doubt na habang tumatagal siya dito saĀ Tay Tung ay mag-i-increase pa ang volleyball knowledge niya,ā€ he added.

While flattered by the admiration, the towering Monares admitted that she still has a lot to learn from the sport and is willing to improve on her minor flaws under the guidance of Thunderboltsā€™ coaching staff.

ā€œHindi pa po ako ganun ka galing. May iba pang mas magaling sa akin sa team,ā€ Monares said. ā€œBut I am an eager learner naman and I am willing to improve on my plays.ā€

Monares will be one of the key players for the Thunderbolts-reinforced Negros Occidental girls volleyball team in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet, which will open today in Iloilo City./PN
