MANILA – A Senate bill seeks to expand the coverage of the 20-percent fare discount for students to air, water and rail transport.

The passage of Senate Bill No. 1597 would be an “early Christmas gift” to students, said the author, Juan Edgardo Angara.

Tiyak na makatitipid ang mga magulang dahil alam naman nating hindi lang matrikula ang kanilang pinagkakagastusan kundi pati na rin ang baon at pamasahe ng mga estudyante,” said Angara.

More than 20 million public and private students and their families will benefit from the measure, said the vice chairman of the education committee.

Under the bill, all students enrolled in basic and tertiary education institutions, including technical-vocational institutions, are entitled to a 20-percent discount on regular domestic travel fares – in jeepneys, buses, UV Express vans, taxis and transport network vehicle services Grab and Uber, MRT, LRT, domestic flights, and sea vessels – upon presentation of their duly issued school identification card or current validated enrollment forms.

Postgraduate students were not qualified for the discount, stated the bill.

The measure also sought to exempt those traveling abroad for education, training and competition from the payment of travel tax upon showing of sufficient proof indicating the travel purpose./PN
