MANILA – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts failed to sustain its strong start and succumbed to a 25-16, 20-25, 20-25 defeat to Holy Rosary College in the Rebisco Volleyball League at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.

Thunderbolts surged to an early lead in the opening set on Wednesday behind Shane Carmona and Marianne Sotomil but faltered in the next two sets with Holy Rosary banking on the offense of Trisha Mae Genesis.

“It was a tough loss for the girls but this is also a learning experience for them,” said Jose Montalbo, Tay Tung’s vice chairman for sports. “We still have games left in our schedule so we are still positive that we can make it to the next round.”

With two games remaining in its schedule, the Bacolod City-based volleyball team – 2-1 (win-loss) in Pool B – will have a slim chance of making it to advance in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Hope Christian High School continued its unblemished run in Pool A by beating the cellar-dwelling Leyte National High School in straight sets 25-9, 25-16.

Antiqueña Irah Anika Jaboneta, Ilongga Athea Aposaga, Chenae Basarte, and Mycah Go spearheaded the attack for the Jerry Yee-mentored Hope Christian High School, which improved to 3-0.

De La Salle-Lipa, on the other hand, encountered some resistance from University of San Jose-Recoletos before scoring 25-18, 25-12 to remain undefeated in three games.

Mirgie Bautista, Janel Maraguinot and Alleiah Malaluan bannered the offense of De La Salle Lipa, one of the favored teams in the tournament, along with Nazareth School of National University./PN
