MANILA – Filipinos have been urged to oppose the President Rodrigo Duterte administration’s tax hike plan.
Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV on Sunday said that increasing the excise tax on oil products is “heartless” and “unreasonable.”
“After killing thousands of poor people in his war on drugs, the President now intends to slowly kill many more Filipinos with his tax plan that would significantly increase prices on fuel, transportation, and basic commodities,” Trillanes said.
Higher taxes on oil would mean an increase to P10 per liter on regular gasoline, leaded and unleaded premium gasoline aviation turbo jet fuel, lubricating greases and oils, naptha, and petrolatum and waxes, the senator added.
Diesel, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas and other products presently exempted from excise tax would be levied with a P6 per liter excise tax under the Duterte tax plan.
The proposal, Trillanes also said, removes the value added tax exemptions granted to senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
“This just shows the President’s lack of sympathy to the plight of Filipino people. Instead of stimulating the economy, the Duterte tax plan will greatly diminish the purchasing power of the people thereby worsening the poverty in our country.”
Trillanes vowed to “do everything in my capacity” to push back against the proposal in the Senate./PN
