KALIBO, Aklan – Schools in Aklan are discouraged from holding extravagant graduation or closing ceremonies.

“Don’t spend for extravagant attire or hold [such] ceremonies in hotels,” stressed Dr. Jesse Gomez, schools superintendent of the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Aklan.

Graduation ceremonies should be held in school campuses, while graduating students may wear their school uniform or “Sunday clothes,” Gomez said.

“Make your closing and graduation exercises simple yet meaningful,” he stressed.

The DepEd are encouraging all schools to observe austerity measures in holding rites to end the school year 2016-2017.

School officials may not use the students’ nonpayment of voluntary contributions as reason for not signing their clearances or issuing class/report cards, the DepEd said.

Such contributions include Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Girl Scouts of the Philippines, and anti-tuberculosis and Philippine Red Cross donations.

“These organizations are partners of the DepEd in the development of schoolchildren,” said Gomez. “Parents who could afford may pay the voluntary contributions.”

Parent-teacher associations, meanwhile, may voluntarily contribute for post-graduation celebrations.

Gomez urged parents of pupils and students in public and private schools to report any violation of the “no collection policy” to the DepEd-Aklan office or call (036) 2684235.

This year’s graduation theme is “Sabay-sabay sa Hakbang Tungo sa Maunlad na Kinabukasan.”

After a two-month summer vacation for students, the school year 2017-2018 will open on June 5. “There will be massive trainings for K-12 teachers in April and May,” Gomez said. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
