ILOILO City – A police officer assigned at the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) faces investigation and possibly an administrative charge. His gun went off on Sunday night, upsetting a neighbor in Barangay San Isidro, La Paz district.

The neighbor, 70-year-old Neriza Soquiña, said Senior Police Officer 1 Romel Nandin of the Iloilo City Public Safety Company fired his gun around 9:15 p.m.

After learning of the incident yesterday, Senior Superintendent Cezar Hawthorne Binag, new acting regional police director, ordered an investigation.

Filing a report at the La Paz police station, Soquiña said an angry Nandin entered her compound and ordered her to turn the volume of her loud karaoke down.

A heated argument ensued, with Nandin leaving the compound then firing his gun outside, claimed Soquiña.

“If the neighbor is not interested to file a complaint against our policeman, we will be the one to do that,” said Binag.

He directed the Police Regional Office 6’s deputy regional director for operations, Senior Superintendent Christopher Tambungan, to spearhead the investigation.

Nandin denied firing his gun in front of his neighbor’s compound.

“I advised them to lower the volume of their karaoke because it was disturbing the neighborhood. Wala ko ya nagpalupok kay wala man sang misunderstanding nga natabo sa amon,” Nandin insisted.

But he said while he was on his way home, he accidentally tripped himself and his .9mm pistol went off.

“It was a case of accidental firing and not indiscriminate firing,” said Nandin.

He welcomed the investigation.

Meeting all police chiefs across Western Visayas for the first time on May 18, Binag stressed the importance of discipline in the Philippine National Police (PNP) organization.

“If we have discipline, corruption and immoral acts will be prevented,” said Binag.

Reminding policemen that they were public servants, Binag said discipline would result to better performance.

“Our internal cleansing efforts must continue, too,” said Binag./PN
