ILOILO City – Citing the frequent vehicular accidents at the intersection of the national highway and circumferential road in Barangay Buhang, Jaro district, the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) of the city government pressed for a traffic light in the area.
According to Jeck Conlu, PSTMO chief, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog allotted budget for the traffic light but the Commission on Audit (COA) disallowed it because the intersection was part of a national road.
It was the Department of Public Works and Highways that had jurisdiction on the area, stressed COA.
“Masulat kita liwat sa DPWH kag i-remind sila sang aton request,” Conlu told Panay News.
It was the Public Works department, too, which installed the traffic light at the intersection of the circumferential road and Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district, said Conlu.
While waiting for a response from DPWH, PSTMO would be putting traffic signs at the intersection of the national highway and circumferential road in Barangay Buhang.
Traffic enforcers would also be posted in the area, said Conlu.
A “special operations team” from the Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office will direct the flow of traffic especially during rush hours, he said.
In April this year, Mabilog suggested the transfer of the P386-million flyover from Jalandoni Street, City Proper to Barangay Buhang “agud makasabat sa problema sang trapiko sa lugar.”
The Jalandoni flyover was opened to traffic on July 9, 2010. It was built under the French-assisted Mega Bridges for Urban and Rural Development Project of the then Arroyo administration.
The flyover was 315 lineal meters long, including its approaches. According to Mabilog, however, it was ineffective in easing traffic congestion on Jalandoni and General Luna streets./PN
