BORACAY – More Chinese travelers are visiting this island resort.

They topped first quarter (January to March) foreign arrivals with 99,911 — 10-percent higher than their number (90,736) in the same period last year.

The “[Philippines’] growing warm relations with China and the direct regional flights from mainland China to the Philippines, particularly the Kalibo [International] Airport, contributed to the increase,” said Kristoffer Leo Velete, tourism officer-in-charge.

Korean tourists numbered 98,782, a one-percent increase from 97,783 last year, while Taiwanese visitors reached 13,130, data from the Municipal Tourism Office of Malay showed.

East Asians (Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea, and Japan) numbered 215,049, or 75 percent of the total foreign arrivals in the first quarter.

North Americans (United States, Canada and Mexico) numbered 11,395, or 4 percent of the total, followed by Northern European (Sweden, Ireland, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and United Kingdom) with 11,299.

Southeast Asians (Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia) reached 9,130, while Western Europeans (Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, and Switzerland) had 9,109 arrivals.

Long-haul tourists from Russia and Poland numbered 7,527. Emerging markets in the Middle East posted 5,806 arrivals.

Total foreign arrivals in the first quarter reached 284,878, up from 283,468 last year.

Domestic tourists, on the other hand, totaled 211,169, up by 11 percent from 190,344 in the same period last year. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
