ILOILO City – Having a “waste conscience” will help keep the surroundings trash-free, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6.

Western Visayas residents were encouraged to observe the “National Zero Waste Month” this January.

Regional Director Jim Sampulna specifically pointed to waste segregation, which he said must be practiced “at the source – at the households, where the bulk of wastes are collected.”

He reminded the public to practice the three Rs: Reduce using materials that can harm the planet, Reuse plastics and other reusable materials, and Recycle trash.

“Filipinos have a creative mind, especially Ilonggos, I know you can do incredible things out of trash,” he said.

He also urged the city government to put in place a stricter policy on waste collection to unload the sanitary landfill in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district.

Sampulna said they are currently conducting a campaign to educate households and establishments on the importance and benefits of solid waste management.

Proclamation No. 760 declares every January as “National Zero Waste Month” to promote the designing and managing of products and processes to avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials.

It also encourages people to have a resourceful lifestyle, in which discarded materials can be redesigned as resources for others to use.

More important, the public must be waste-conscious not only this month but for the rest of the year, Sampulna said. (PNA)
