KALIBO, Aklan – Black Beauty Boys — six-time Tribal Big category champion — will defend its title in today’s Sadsad Ati-Atihan street-dancing contest.

Thirty tribes and groups are joining the competition, the highlight of the weeklong Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Festival.

The tribe from Barangay Linabuan Norte will compete against five other Tribal Big contenders for the P180,000 grand prize — the biggest in Ati-Atihan history.

Also under Tribal Big are Kabog, Tribu Timawa and Tribu Tiis-Tiis, all from this capital town, and four tribes from the municipality of Makato — D’Kamanggahan, Pangawasan Tribe, Vikings, and Maharlika.

The Tribal Small category also has a defending champion: Tribu Bukid Tigayon.

It will compete with Tribu Alibangbang, Tribu Ninolitos, Lezo Tribe, Tribu Tikbalang, and Tribu Responde for the P80,000 top prize.

Under Modern Group category, the contenders include last year’s champion Aeang-Aeang, Bae-ot Bae-ot, D’ Emagine, Lagalag 27 Original, Pirates 1962, Royal Scorpio, Road Side, Pagmukeat, and Gala Drumbeat.

Meanwhile in Balik-Ati category, defending champion Tribu Ilayanhon mga Inapo ni Gen. Candido Iban will try to outperform Malipayong Ati, Apo ni Inday, Maninikop, Kinantuing, Anono-o Group, and Sinikway nga Ati.

The champions of the Modern Group and Balik-Ati categories will take home P70,000 each.

Moreover, there are 11 individual participants in the Modern Tribal and Original Ati categories. Three winners from each category will get P3,000 each.

All contestants will assemble on Desposorio Maagma Sr. and Mabini streets and dance on major streets starting 8 a.m.

The winners will be announced at 9 p.m. tomorrow during the “Pagpadungog” at the Magsaysay Park.

The municipal government allocated P963,000 for this year’s contests — up 26 percent from last year’s P764,000.

Meanwhile festival organizer Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. released P882,500 in subsidies to the participating tribes and groups — up 16 percent from last year’s P783,000. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
