ILOILO City – Ilonggo senator Franklin Drilon said he would support Cong. Jerry Treñas should the latter run for mayor in the 2019 midterm elections.

“Daw maayo man nga magbalik s’ya kon sige pa s’ya. Akon ‘ya, kon madalagan si Jerry, si Jerry ang aton nga kandidato,” said Drilon during the recent inauguration of the Iloilo Esplanade’s Phase 3 and the Nabitasan-San Rafael bypass road.

Treñas is in his third and final consecutive term as congressman. He is barred by law from seeking a fourth consecutive term.

December last year, Treñas announced he was quitting politics in 2019 after his third term as congressman ends. He then endorsed Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog for congressman and Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III as city mayor.

Drilon said he would support Treñas even if the congressman is now with the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

Treñas was previously with the Liberal Party but left to join President Rodrigo Duterte’s party weeks after the 2016 elections.

“Diri ‘ya’ what is important in Iloilo, regardless of your political affiliation, is if political leaders unite we will continue the progress of Iloilo,” said Drilon who remains with the Liberal Party.

Treñas served as Iloilo City mayor for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2010. He surprised everyone in 2010 when he ran for congressman against his then political ally Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr.

He denied he was trying to deceive Mabilog by announcing he was quitting politics in 2019.

If Treñas runs for mayor, three-termer Vice Mayor Espinosa – his brother-in-law – will likely run for congressman and clash against Mabilog.

Treñas told this paper in January 2016 he “always enjoyed being mayor.”  The job was “action-oriented” and “very in touch with people,” the lawyer-congressman explained.

In both 2004 and 2007 elections, Treñas won by a landslide in all city precincts. He is the only mayor of Iloilo City to do so, he said./PN
