BACOLOD City – Workers “barely make ends meet” under the new tax reform, according to the National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW)-Negros.

“The new tax reform law severs the people, especially workers, [from] the sugar industry,” NFSW-Negros chairman Rolando Rillo said in a statement.

The Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) is the first package of the comprehensive tax reform program of the Duterte administration.

The sugar workers group – which is celebrating its 47th anniversary – continues to fight for genuine land reform and “just wages, adequate benefits and public services,” it said.

“We need to further strengthen NFSW in the whole Negros Island…[It] serves as a progressive center to continue the sugar and farm workers’ struggle for their rights and well-being,” Rillo said.

Rillo also said they are pushing for the passage of the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (House Bill No. 555) and the Regular Employment Bill (House Bill No. 556).

“As we continue the fight, the people who are taking charge of the vast land areas are on tight watch. In Negros alone, around 20 farmers have been killed and not even a single investigation [has been] done,” added Rillo.

Rillo also attacked the Duterte administration, calling the President a “fascist and a puppet of US (United States).”

He said the current administration implements “neoliberal policies that pull down wages and exploit the country’s resources as Duterte welcomes investments that do not improve the people’s socioeconomic conditions.”/PN
