MANILA – At least 10 members of the Maute terrorist group trying to enter Marawi City were killed in a clash with government troops early morning yesterday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said.

The government forces anticipated the move, according to AFP Western Mindanao Command commander Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez Jr.

“The plan of the terrorists was reported to us earlier. That is why it was easier for patrolling special forces’ riverine units and maritime policemen to detect and neutralize the movement,” Galvez said.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. Task Group Musang intercepted 10 Maute group members on board two motorized pump boats, he said.

“A three-hour firefight and pursuit operations ensued after they were intercepted,” Galvez said.

“The recent accomplishment of our ground forces only shows the successful coordination made by our troops and the local government units,” he added.

“Let this be a warning to those Maute terrorist members who intend to escape [or] enter Marawi City. Our troops are ready for you. We will definitely get you.”

The clashes between Maute members and the state forces started on May 23 when the latter tried to arrest Abu Sayyaf Group leader Isnilon Hapilon, who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and was in Marawi./PN
